Ten Sad Questions to ask your next Character

Using character prompts is a creative and effective way to develop well-rounded and engaging characters in any storytelling context, including tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs). Knowing your Character before the first dice is rolled is a rewarding experience. It encourages the exploration of unique quirks, motivations, and backstories that may have yet to be initially considered. We aim to foster creativity and seek depth as we build our storytelling skills.

This prompt looks at one of the three core areas in this series: Emotional drives.

Sadness is a foundational emotion. It can be uncomfortable, but how a character acts, reacts, and navigates moments of sorrow creates complexity and sets up what to expect as these characters traverse plots and themes in a story or engage with other characters who may not handle sadness the same way.

Here are ten sad questions to consider when your Character experiences sadness.
